What are the benefits of waxing vs other hair removal methods?
There are other methods of hair removal, but they come with their own pros and cons. Here are the most common hair removal options besides waxing:
- Needed roughly every day
- It’s dangerous, nicks and cuts can result in scarring :(
- Hair regrowth is coarse, making hair appear darker and more prominent
- Often causes irritation and ingrown hairs
- It smells nasty
- Inconvenient (you usually have to leave the goop on for at least several minutes at which time you can do nothing)
- Potential for irritation or allergic reaction, including raw skin and in some cases crust and ooze. Gross. At least one woman has gotten 3rd degree burns from the caustic chemical concoction. Try saying that 10 times fast
- Not suitable for all hair types (red, blonde and grey hair are not treatable with laser)
- Possible scarring or hyper pigmentation depending on skills of technician and your skin type
- Typically needed only once a month
- Hair grows back soft and is therefore less visible
- Usually results in gradual reduction of hair growth (it gets easier every time)
- Smaller chances ofirritation and ingrown hairs
How do I prepare for my waxing service?
Most importantly, don’t shave for 2-3 weeks. The reason for this is that you want the hair to be at least 1/4” long. A good way to tell when you’re ready for a wax is by seeing if you can grab and pull the hair with your fingertips.
Exfoliate gently a few days before to get rid of dead skin and prepare it for waxing. If you’re one day away from your appointment, don’t worry about the exfoliation step. It’ll only make your session a little more uncomfortable. If you need suggestions on products contact me for great pre and post care products to keep your skin healthy in between waxing services.
Does waxing hurt?
It can be uncomfortable. Especially if it is your first time or it has been awhile since your last waxing. It is important to stay regular with your waxing appointments, generally every 4 weeks, to stay on top of new hair growth and keep all of the hairs in the same cycle. I say that if this is your first waxing then you can rest easy knowing that the second visit (if it is within that 4 week range) will be exponentially easier. The first time those hairs are removed they hold on a little tighter, the second and subsequent times are always easier.
What about Brazilian waxing? It sounds so scary
I would like to talk to those who still shave because of the fear of the dreaded "brazilian wax". If you suffer from ingrown hairs when shaving, they are much less common with waxing and extra precautions such as high frequency current. Your esthetician’s product knowledge will be used to minimize ingrown hairs. It’s important to discuss all skin concerns and questions with your esthetician as well. Even seemingly unrelated things like antibiotics can make your skin thinner and more likely to lift. Oral medications such as Acutane makes skin extremely fragile and you will need to be off of it for at least 6 months before you wax.Topical medications like Retin A will need to be stopped one week prior and one week post waxing for those areas. Be sure to answer all of your skincare professional's questions honestly so we can be sure your skin is happy and healthy. It takes 3-5 waxing services to get the hairs all growing in at the same cycle. The maintenance period is different for each individual depending on their hair growth. The average is 4 weeks in between each waxing service. I offer a relaxing spa room where my goal is to keep you comfortable. As I tell my clients, "I see hair to be removed, and that's all". This is a very professional procedure and most likely I will have you laughing through it as some clients have commented on their brazilian experience. For ladies, you will find waxing immediately after your period more comfortable because of hormonal fluctuations that can make you more sensitive right before your cycle, but you can be waxed while on your period if you are using tampons or a menstrual cup. In summary, brazilians are built up to be much worse than the actual experience truly, so I invite you to ditch the razor and give it a try.
Do men get waxed as often as women?
Men don’t often look to waxing as an option for hair removal, but this method is an ideal solution for areas with excessive unwanted hair. The most common areas males consider waxing (perhaps only when they are going on vacation and will be in a swimsuit) are their back and chest, with brazilians becoming more popular as men are experiencing the benefits. And trust me gentleman, this is not just a summer thing as you will soon discover. I recently had a client who came to me because he was going to be having a second round of surgery and was tortured by a nurse who trimmed and shaved the “boxer area” for his last surgery. He had been waxed once before and realized how much more comfortable it became to do his job and sit in heavy equipment all day. All of that excess hair causes a lot of sweat and discomfort. I also have clients who are soldiers and endure weeks in the field, and waxing provides at least a little more comfort “down below”. The best benefit of waxing is that each time the hair grows back soft (no more rubbing on your briefs boxers or jeans if you’re a commando guy :) and there is less regrowth with every waxing service. Each waxing is faster and easier and requires less maintenance, it’s really a win win. The most common reason men shy away from waxing is the concern with the pain involved. I cannot say it is painless, there is a level of discomfort, I’m ripping hair out from the roots. The first waxing is the most uncomfortable, and will be a longer service, but the 2nd service and each one after that will be exponentially more comfortable and shorter in duration. Your 1st appointment will be scheduled for an hour, maintenance will require 30-45 minute appointments. You get to pick the Pandora station (I have waxed to Five Finger Death Punch and Sex Pistols radio. This is your time and I want you to be as comfortable as possible.), I have a stress ball and a good sense of humor. I promise to do all I can to make your experience as comfortable as possible. One of the most important waxing components is consistency, and as I mentioned before, every subsequent wax becomes more and more comfortable. Give me 3 waxing appointments and you’ll be hooked.
Are there any contraindications to waxing? (reasons you cannot be waxed)
It's very important to communicate all of your medications and concerns clearly to your esthetician. In addition to the aforementioned topical treatments, acne or anti aging products containing benzoyl peroxide, glycolic or salicylic acid a patch test may require a skin sensitivity check. You cannot get a waxing treatment if your skin is sunburned or otherwise irritated, if you have had microdermabrasion or a chemical peel recently, or if you are undergoing laser hair removal. After you are waxed your skin is more sensitive to the sun and must be protected with SPF of at least 25, and is best to stay covered if possible and avoid sun exposure. Hot tubs and saunas should be avoided for at least 24 hours.
General skincare questions
What is a facial?
I call facials a skincare workout because I am performing a treatment to mimic what our body does naturally. But when we age these natural processes slow down. When we are young, our outer skin layers exfoliate quickly to reveal fresh young skin cells about every 28 days. As we get older this process slows down and results in a dull complexion because that outer layer doesn’t shed as easily and those young skin cells become trapped. By “working out” the skin, it stimulates collagen and elastin production as those outer layers are exfoliated, resulting in glowing skin that has renewed firmness and reduction in fine lines, wrinkles and hyper pigmentation (dark spots). A facial includes thorough cleansing (yes it’s ok to come in with makeup on, I’m going to remove it), exfoliation, hydration and sunscreen protection. Mixed in there is the pampering facial, neck and shoulder massage and your choice of hand or foot massage to make your experience even more relaxing. Facials are customized for your skin’s individual needs and based on your concerns. Common imperfections that facials treat are acne, fine lines/wrinkles, age spots/hyper-pigmentation, skin laxity and dullness. For men, it is best to avoid shaving the day of your facial in order to avoid increased sensitivity.
What is microdermabrasion?
A specialized hand piece is used to glide over the skin and spray very fine crystals. These tiny exfoliators are sprayed onto the surface layers to exfoliate and then vacuumed off of the skin. This sheds the outermost layer of skin to uncover healthy new skin, and the suction action stimulates collagen and elastin production to reveal a healthy glowing complexion. Some benefits of microdermabrasion include:
- Improved appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Stimulated collagen production (promotes young and taut skin)
- Previously coarse or rough skin is left soft to the touch
- Minimized appearance of scarring (exception: keloid)
- Minimized appearance of stretch marks
- Reduced hyperpigmentation (age spots and liver spots)
- Large pores are minimized with the treatment’s thorough cleansing action
- Subsequent deeper product penetration
What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a controlled wounding of the skin that causes a response from the skin cells to heal and rejuvenate the skin by making it stronger. They are used to treat a variety of concerns. Peels can be very light with little to no visible flaking of the skin, to considerable peeling which may require downtime for some. The word chemical itself can cause some discomfort in some but rest assured, peels have come a long way in their development and there are solutions for all types of skin and your tolerance to appearance after the treatment. Based on your skin type and concerns we can discuss the best option and ensure that you are fully educated on expectations. Some of the benefits of chemical peels include:
- Reduced fine lines
- Minimized wrinkles
- Improved appearance of mild scars
- Several types of acne are treated
- Reduced age spots and hyperpigmentation
- Improved look and feel of skin
What is dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation that utilizes a specialized instrument designed to scrape away accumulated dead skin cells and vellous hair. It is a comfortable, relaxing procedure that can be combined with other services to improve their efficacy. Dermaplaning is ideal for women of all skin types and colors in their 30’s and beyond who are interested in improving the health and appearance of their skin. Benefits include brighter, softer skin that glows with renewed health. You’ll also notice a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, hyperpigmentation and acne scars. One of the best aspects of dermaplaning is it’s immediate results. No downtime and no waiting to look your best. This is the perfect treatment to get before important events. I recommend coming in every 4 weeks to maintain results and continue to see improvement in skin tone and texture while diminishing acne scars, fine lines & pore size. Results are cumulative so your skin will continue to improve each time you come in.
What is Lash Lifting?
Lash lifting is the application is a technique used to curl your natural lashes which eliminates the need for using an eyelash curler for up to 8 weeks. Add a tint to those lashes to give a dramatic effect that may even have you skipping mascara :)
